Couteau de Chasse c1838-1840

£475.00

Attractive couteau de chasse by Coulaux Ainé c1838-1840. The 22 inch single edged sword has a distinctive pipebacked blade with large yelman of approximately 12 inches long. Stylish horn hilt, tapering into vertical ribs from the crenelated pommel to an elaborate cast crossbar with finials in the form of dogs head, possibly a greyhound or mastiff, in the center of the crossbar cast heads of a stag or a boar respectively

The handle and guard are solid with no movement, some pitting to the blade

The blade is engraved Manufacture de Klingenthal Coulaux Ainé & Cie. This particular title was used by the company between 1838 and 1860. In addition, on the blade is one of the factory’s inspection stamps – a capital B surmounted by a styalised crown – indicating the two year period 1838-1840.

The scabbard is of black leather with a single vertical seam hidden on the side next to the body. A plain silvered metal scabbard throat extends approx four inches; the suspension stud is in the form of a styalised lion facing on; the chape, of the same material, is more elaborate on the front, with trefoil characters and stylised flora
