A good example of an early 18th century Spanish Rapier. Twisted wire grip, with an iron bulb pommel and an asymmetric shell guard. Deep double fullers stretching halfway down the blade, with a pleasing overall patina. Overall length 104cm, blade length 84cm. Solid overall with no movement in the blade or guard.
Coming from the waning years of rapier production this piece was probably made for the Spanish market, potentially for their colonies in South America, where the rapier continued to enjoy robust popularity.
