18th Century Plug Bayonet
An 18th Century French reversible hilt plug bayonet. With a black horn grip, carved with sweeping fluted channels. The handle unscrews at the neck and can be reversed to create a standard knife. With an engraved silver hallmarked crossguard and pommel. It is a single edged blade with details of a hound chasing a boar and various foliate and knotwork engraving (rubbed). The spine is engraved with a broad arrow, normally used to indicate the point of percussion in swords, but unusual in a bayonet. Housed in an associated scabbard (af).
Measures approx 42cm.
Popular in Spain and Germany long after they were replaced as a military bayonet, they were mainly used for hunting larger animals, including deer and boar
