17th Century Spanish Parrying Dagger

£2,300.00

Dating from around 1640-1680, this is an excellent example of a Spanish Parrying Dagger, with a classic sail guard.

The blade is 40cm long, and 52cm overall, and 4cm wide at the ricasso. Fretted and chiselled iron guard decorated with images of cherubs, animals and foliage. Cylindrical quillons with large ball finials with filework decoration. The square section ricasso has decorative file work that extends /3rd of the spine of the blade. With a double edged spear tip.

The handle is decorated in fluted ivory, suggesting that it might have a naval provenance
