Paradoxes of Defence by George Silver was regionally printed in 1599, A later edition was thought to have been written in 1604 but it, remained an unpublished manuscript until its discovery in 1898 by fencing historian Captain Cyril G. R. Matthey in the archives of the British Library. It was published by by George Bell and Sons, London. And used by Matthey as a training manual to aid soldiers fighting in the Boer War.

The work extends Silver's arguments, and explains some of his method for using his preferred weapons (he recommends the shorter backsword as being more versatile and offering better defence than the rapier). It also provides detailed instructions on the handling of various weapons, including the sword, staff, and dagger
