Robert Jackson. A view of the formation, discipline and economy of armies: with an appendix, containing hints for medical arrangement in actual war. New edition with with the much enlarged half-title. Uncut in the original boards, printed paper title label on the spine, tear in the front endpaper, minor new repairs at head and foot of spine, a few pages with a little light staining the top margin. Robert Jackson (1750-1827) was a Scottish physician-surgeon, reformer and inspector of army hospitals. For several years he practiced medicine in Stockton-on-Tees where this book was published. First published in 1804 this enlarged second edition of his best-known book is to be preferred. In a long chapter he examines the military character of the armies of many European countries as well as those of ancient Greece and Rome. There are chapters on the selection and training of recruits, tactics, the intellectual and moral motives of military action, discipline in the field, service in tropical climates etc.
